Early Life

Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu was born on 8th July 1991 in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. However, she never got enough time to spend with her parents as they passed away too early when Thuso was a toddler. Her mother died due to a brain tumor. So, she and her older sister Masentle Noma Lungelo Mbedu were raised by her grandmother, who was her legal guardian. Her grandmother gave all the love to fill her parent’s place in Thuso’s life and supported her to become successful. However, when she was 23, her grandmother passed away before her first TV debut.

As a fresher, she attended Pietermaritzburg Girls High School. Later on, she shifted to the University of the Witwatersrand for her further studies when she was 18. There she studied Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management and got graduated with Honours. Moreover, in 2012, she attended the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York, USA.

Thuso was into acting since she was a teenager and always wanted to become famous. She began her acting career while she was studying in 10th grade. During her high school days, she wrote, directed, and starred in the house play that received a standing ovation. After a lot of struggle in 2014, she was offered a small role in the second season of the Mzansi Magic soapie Isibaya. Prior to that she starred in Scandal and portrayed the role of a Journalist student and a wild child. She made a guest appearance on the second season of the SABC 2 teen drama series Snake Park.

Later in 2016, after being jobless for over six months, she was seen again in the teen drama series Is‘thunzi’. She is all set to make her international debut in the Amazon Video historical limited series The Underground RailroadThis series got directed and executively produced by Barry Jenkins, who is an Academy Award winner. Recently, in April 2021, her starring in The Woman King alongside Viola Davis was announced. This movie is inspired by the true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, which is considered to be one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.
