Sig Hansen Biography

he Sig Hansen is an American-Norwegian captain of the fishing vessel M/S Stabas and F/V North-western. His full name is Sigurd Jonny Hansen. He is famous for the documentary television series Deadliest Catch feature. In addition to his position as captain, he also serves as a technical advisor for production. The spin-off of the show features him alongside his daughter, Mandy, and her husband. 

Early Life

Sig was born on April 28, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. His father is Sverre Hansen, a descendant of a Norwegian – legacy fisherman. His grandfather and father developed a way to earn money throughout the year by fishing opilio crabs. They were present year-round rather than in late-year season or short term. His brothers are Norman and Edgar. Sig started fishing at an early age by working on his family’s boat.

He graduated from Shorewood High School. After his high school graduation, he properly started spending months developing his passion for fishing. He would spend around 10 months fishing per year in Alaska and the Bering Sea. During the summer he would also fish cod and mackerel in Norway. He was so passionate about fishing that he would skip school so he could go fishing.

Sig Hansen Career

Sig Hansen started his fishing career as a deckhand on his father’s boat. He became a relief skipper at the age of 22 and would relieve other captains on the North-western. Two years later he began running the fishing vessel full time. Within years the boat became a top producer. The boat recorded no deaths at sea during the time Hansen was at its helm.

The North-western won the final derby season in 2005 and 2006 for King Crab and Oplilio respectively. The boat won the titles of both the highest dollars earned between the featured boats and the highest poundage caught in the Deadliest Catch. In 2011 Sig started serving as full-time captain during Opilio crab and king season.

His younger brothers Norman and Edgar are deckhand and deck boss respectively. In 2010 Sig released his own book North by North-western and became a published author. The book reached the Wall Street Journal and in the bestsellers list of the New York Times. Sig stars in the show Deadliest Catch which is one of the most-watched shows on Discovery and he is one of the favorite captains of the show.

His biological daughter is Melissa, from his previous marriage. Sig’s daughter Mandy has joined him on the North-western.
