Sandra Maas is an American journalist, newscaster, and advocate for women’s rights. For over three decades, she has been employed in the San Diego, California region, and has garnered 13 regional Emmy award nominations during her tenure. 

Early Life

Sandra Lynn Maas, who was born on January 13, 1963, and grew up in Mission Viejo, California, had parents who were successful in their respective professions. Her father, Frank Maas, owned a window tinting business, while her mother, Dorothea (Brockman) Maas, served as an elementary school principal. After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in communications at California State University, Chico, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1985, Maas began her career as a news anchor for KCHO Chico and KPAY radio, Redding. In her senior year, she made the transition to television and served as the weeknight co-anchor at KRCR-TV, an ABC affiliate.

Sandra Maas Career

She began her career at NBC affiliate KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1986. She co-anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts and was the station’s medical reporter during the onset of the AIDS crisis, receiving recognition for her on-air contributions with a Golden Mike Award. After four years, Maas moved to San Diego and joined CBS Affiliate KFMB-TV in 1990. She co-anchored the News 8 program at 4 pm alongside Mitch Duncan and continued to work as a medical reporter for the station. Additionally, Maas served as a national medical correspondent for CBS Newspath.

Maas had a recurring role on the Jeff and Jer Morning Show on Star 94.1 at the same time. In 1993, she had a small part in the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, portraying nurse Sally Winslow. Following KFMB-TV’s split from the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in 2001, Maas was among those who left the station in a group. After failing to renegotiate her contract, she resigned.

Rise to Fame

Andrea Maas worked as a freelance journalist for the San Diego-based Fox affiliate XETV in 2002. Two years later, she joined KUSI-TV, initially co-anchoring Good Morning San Diego. She later hosted Inside San Diego with Andrea Naversen in 2006. In 2009, she was promoted to serve as the weeknight co-anchor of The KUSI News at 6 and 10pm alongside Allen Denton. Maas has served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards since 1993.

In addition, she generously volunteers her time as a moderator or Mistress of Ceremonies for various events hosted by non-profit organizations. Maas became a member of the board of the Women’s Museum of California in San Diego in 2020. She also initiated the creation of “Trailblazing Women,” a video series for the museum where she holds the position of Vice President of External Affairs.
