Rodney Terry is an American college basketball interim head coach working relentlessly for Texas Longhorns. He has proved his worth by leading his team to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. Early Life

Rodney was born on March 27, 1968, in Angleton, USA to his father Calvin Philips, and his mother Brenda Phillips. Terry did his high school graduated from Angleton High School. He graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and did a minor in physical education. Terry started playing basketball in college. He was really passionate about the game. Years later he joined St Edward’s as an assistant coach.

Rodney Terry Career

In 190-91, Rodney started his coaching career at St. Edward’s working as an assistant coach. Next, he worked at James Bowie High School as an assistant. He worked there from 1991 to 1993. After working in Bowie he joined Somerville High School in Somerville, Texas. He was appointed as the head coach. He went 49-21 and led the team to class 2A semi-finals in just two seasons. Jack then returned to Angleton High School to work as the head coach. He coached the team for the 1995-96 season and during that season he had a cumulative score of 64-34 high school coaching record.

In 1996 he worked as an assistant coach at Baylor under Harry Miller. He worked there for two years and then joined UNCW, working with the staff of Jerry Wainwright. Terry joined Taxes in 2002 and worked there for a long time. He joined as an assistant coach under Rick Barnes. There he helped recruit McDonald’s All-American players like Tristan Thompson, Kevin Durant, and D.J. Augustine. Under his guidance, the college team made it to the final four in the NCAA tournament in 2003. They also made it to Elite Eight in 2006 and 2008.

Rise to Fame

In 2011 head coach Steve Cleveland was replaced by Rodney at Fresno State. He led Fresno to go 13-20 in his first season. In the next season, Fresno State moved to MWC ( Mountain West Conference). The team reached national prominence under Rodney’s mentorship. Fresno State extended Rodney’s contract through 2017. Fresno State went on to do great in NCAA tournaments and made drastic improvements to their game. Rodney led The team to a 25-10 record and the MW tournament title.

Following the success, Fresno State extended the contract again through the 2020-21 season and gave nearly a $50,000 annual raise. In the 2022-23 season, he joined Texas Longhorns as the interim head coach at Texas for the Longhorns following the former coach Chris Beard’s arrest for domestic violence. He joined the team in between the season of NCAA tournaments. The team’s performance in the tournament will asses his candidacy for the job as the head coach.
