Robert Contee began his official police career in 1989 when he joined the department of the Metropolitan Police. At that time, he was a senior in high school and was later promoted to the designation of sworn officer in 1992. He was immediately assigned to the Third District, and his rank rose to the position of sergeant.
From being a sergeant, he was immediately promoted to lieutenant and subsequently served as Patrol Services and Leader in the Second District. After that, he was assigned to look after the intelligence branch in the North as the Regional Operations Commander.
Then in 2004, he was promoted to Captain, where he took control of the Homicide Branch and Sexual Assault Unit. After getting promoted, he took over the Special Operations Division (SOD) command in April 2006. He was responsible for handling the tactical patrol, special events, traffic safety, and functions there.
Rise to Fame
Following the post at SOD, Robert Contee became the chief commander of the Sixth District. He maintained the position from 2007 until October 2014, when he was given the responsibilities of Recruiting Division. Initially, he fulfilled the responsibilities of a commander in January 2016 and was later transferred to the MPD’s Professional Development Bureau in the summer of 2016.
At last, in April 2017, he was honored with the position of Patrol Chief of Patrol Services South (PSS), responsible for overseeing the First, Sixth, and Seventh Police Districts. Then in March 2018, he became the assistant chief of the Investigative Services Bureau, handling departments like the Criminal Investigations Division, the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division, and other criminal branches.
Finally, in January 2021, he was promoted to the Chief of Police by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. On 26th April 2023, it was announced that the chief would be retiring from the position of MPD and would accept the new position of assistant director of the FBI.
