Rico Roman is a 41-year-old Oregon personality who is a former Army Staff Sergeant and currently the ice sled hockey player by profession. He belongs to Portland and has competed in the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

Early Life

Rico Roman, who was born on 4th February 1981, belongs to American Mexican descent. He went to Alpha High School back in 2000 to complete his primary education. Later, he joined the army of the United States soon after. He was on his duty and was serving in Iraq when he got his left leg amputated by hitting by an IED back in February 2007. After he received the big loss because of the injury, one of the operation comfort personnel suggested Roman join the San Antonio Rampage sled hockey club.

So, he joined the club and started playing for the same, establishing his build-up career in sled hockey from the 2009 to 2011 seasons. He is the son of Connie Roman and was brought up along with two brothers, Benito and Carlos. Rico retired from the Army which made him left with his left leg amputated above the knee. He is the recipient of the purple heart. He was introduced to hockey in 2008 by Operation Comfort, an organization that is dedicated to assisting injured personalities of U.S services at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Rico Roman Career

Rico Roman joined the major league hockey team back in 2009 and has been maintaining his position and practices with the team since then. He was introduced to cycling, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair football. Within one year of amputation, Roman succeeded in achieving and maintaining his career in sports while biking for two marathons, where he rode 150 miles in a day and was aimed to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. Rico Roman, the recipient of purple heart, made his debut with U.S. national sled hockey team in 2011 and later went on to secure a position in the first Paralympic Team in 2014.

Back in 2012, Rico joined Dallas Stars, where he was given the help to perform and win the USA Hockey Sled Championship Classic Division A. from 2011 till now, he has been serving his responsibilities on the United States National Sled Hockey Team and has remained one time winner of the 2013 USA Hockey Sled Cup. Rico received the silver medal back in November 2011 in IPC World Sled Hockey Challenge and next, he won the gold medal for the same place followed by the silver medal in the year 2013. In 2012, he was awarded the gold medal, where he won the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship and another silver medal the following year with the same place or position.

Rise to Fame

Prior to playing sled hockey, Rico was not fond of playing the game. He used to wonder whether the Hispanics play the game or not. Even in his interview, he said that he belongs to Oregon, not from the hockey team, so he was not likely to represent the hockey team. In 2014, Rico received another gold medal in his paralympic event in Sochi. Till now he has received three gold medals (2012, 2019, 2021) and two silver medals (2013 and 2017) while experiencing the world championships with the sled hockey team. Despite this, he has remained a three-time Paralympian starting from 2014, where he won a gold medal with his US team followed by another gold medal in the 2018 Paralympics.

His wife helped him throughout his success and the bad days when he lost his leg in the explosion while performing duties in Iraq.
