Richie Mo’unga was born on 25th May 1994 in Christchurch to parents whose father is a Tongan-born and his mother is a Samoan-born. He received his primary education from Riccarton High School in his hometown. The school management offered a scholarship and then he went to St. Andrew’s College, where he was in the team of under-15 in 2009.
Richie played the first 15 rugby for three years, and during his senior years, he captained the team in 2012. After completing college, he began playing for Linwood in the local Canterbury senior club rugby competition while being a member of the Canterbury Academy.
Career
Richie was a team member of New Zealand Under-20 for international games. He finished at the 3rd place in the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand, where he scored 29 points in five games.
Richie once represented the Barbarians against New Zealand on 4th November 2017, scoring 7 points. After finishing the match with the Barbarians, he joined the northern tour consisting of All Blacks, where he could get the chance to enter the squad through his performance in the Mitre 10 Cup.
He played his first match against France the midweek game from New Zealand. He came out as a replacement in the second half during that match. But this match was not counted as his official test match.
Rise to Fame
It was the France test series, and Mo’unga stood against the French side in his debut game on 23rd June 2018. In the match, he replaced Damian McKenzie in the 69th minute. The All-Black team won the game by 49-14.
On 8th September 2018, he began with his first-ever match for New Zealand during round 3 of the competition. His All-Blacks team won the match 46-24 against Argentina, where Richie scored 16 points. He missed only one kick during the night match, which lasted 80 minutes.
On 28th August 2019, Richie was selected as one of the 31 members of New Zealand’s squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He was recognized as the first five-eighth in the squad. After starting as the first five-eighth in the squad, he won the honor of “Man of the Match” award against Canada.
In the quarter-finals, the All-Blacks team, including Mo’unga, played against Ireland and knocked the Ireland team out of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, eventually reaching the semifinals. Then, in the semifinals, the team stood against England and lost the match 19-7. For the third place play-off round, Mo’unga was retained, and his presence led the team to victory over Wales with 40-17.

Richie Mo’unga, at age 25, decided to stay connected forever with his long-time partner and girlfriend, Sophie Vieceli.
