On 23rd June 2022, Richard was present and testified at the fifth public hearing on the case of the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. He talked about his experiences with then-president Trump and the White House during the days after the 2020 US Presidential Elections and before the Capitol Attack of 2021 in the United States. He stated that Trump has embraced the case of “attempts to overturn the decision of the 2020 Presidential Elections in the U.S.”

Controversy

Richard provided the contemporaneous notes to the committee stating that Trump ordered Richard to just say that “the election was corrupt and leave everything rest to me and the Republican Congressman”. Richard claimed that then-President Trump summoned him and other positions of the Department of Justice and informed them that a meeting would be held, which was never actually expected.

During the time, Trump used the occasion and the absence of many of the officials from the department of the justice to pursue the replacement of recent acting attorney general Jeffrey A. Rosen with Jeffrey Clark, who was assumed to be the true believer of Trump during the time. Donoghue stated that after the proposal, Trump asked him “What have I got to lose?” and in answer, Richard Donoghue replied that his actions would trigger mass resignations from the department of justice and it would become a graveyard.
