Rhett Lowder is a junior baseball player representing Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the MCWS 2023. Number 1 seeded Wake Forest certainly surprised everyone this season for sure as they made their way to the college world series and Rhett played an important role in it. 

He was a member of the South Charlotte Panthers club baseball team and ultimately chose Wake Forest over rivals UNC Wilmington, Appalachian State, and Campbell. Rhett Lowder was named to the First Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game, D1Baseball, and the NCBWA, and to the Second Team All-America by all of the aforementioned publications.

Early Life

A native of Albemarle, North Carolina, Rhett was born on March 8, 2002. He was the son of Anthony and Annette Lowder. Joseph, his cousin, is a baseball player for Appalachian State. After graduating from high school, he joined the Jr. Dream team for the Dream on 3 Foundation and served as president of the North Stanly chapter of the National Art Honor Society.

He was nominated twice Pitcher of the Year at the high school and conference levels, earning him Perfect Game’s No. 491 national recruit and No. 12 North Carolina prospect rankings. He recorded 2-0 with 27 strikeouts, 1 walk, and no earned runs allowed in 13.2 innings in his senior year. 

Rhett Lowder Career

As a junior, Rhett was 9-0 with a 0.61 ERA, threw 115 strikeouts against just seven walks in 68.1 innings, and threw two no-hitters. He had a 9-2 record, 1.03 ERA, 96 strikeouts, and 7 walks in 61 innings of work as a sophomore. 

In four starts for the Strasburg Express of the Valley Baseball League, he struck out 27 and allowed just five earned runs over 19.0 innings of work, compiling a record of 2-0. In his freshman year of college, he played in 14 games and made 12 starts, all of them coming on the weekends.

Rhett went 4-2, good enough for a tie for the most victories on his team. He had a 3.55 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which was second-best among freshmen in Deac history, and he struck out 78 batters. In his first collegiate appearance, he made a bullpen appearance against Northeastern and struck out the side.

He concluded the regular season tied for seventh in the conference in strikeouts. His nine strikeouts came in the opening game of a conference doubleheader at Clemson. Rhett made Demon Deacon history as the first Sophomore to win the ACC Pitcher of the Year award. Additionally, he was the third player in the program’s history to be named a Unanimous All-American.

Rise to Fame

He was selected to the All-ACC First Team and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team. With an 11-3 record and 99.1 innings pitched, he made Demon Deacon history by being a finalist for the Collegiate Pitcher of the Year Award. He struck out a career-high 105 hitters, good for 10th most in program history, and became just the 5th pitcher in program history and the first since 2002 to win 11 games in a season.

The only pitcher in the ACC to finish in the top three in wins, strikeouts, earned run average, and innings worked, he entered the NCAA Tournament as one of four pitchers in the nation with 11 victories. Lowder entered the NCAA Tournament as one of four pitchers in the country with 11 wins, an ACC record. He finished the regular season as the ACC’s lone pitcher to rank in the top three in wins, strikeouts, ERA, and innings pitched. He also had a top-10 ranking in three other categories leading up to the NCAA Tournament: walks allowed per nine innings, strikeouts-to-walks ratio, and WHIP.
