Rachel Balkovec is an accomplished American minor league baseball manager. She had also served in Major League Baseball and in Minor League Baseball as the first full-time female hitting coach and manager respectively.

Early Life

Rachel Balkovec was born on 5th July 1987 in the largest city in the U.S. state of Nebraska, Omaha. She was raised up with her two sisters – Valerie Dorgan and Stephanie Balkovec by her parents. Rachel’s father worked as a customer service manager for American Airlines while her mother was a bookkeeper in a local library. Rachel was always interested in sports and used to play softball, soccer, and basketball during her high school days.

Rachel completed her high school education at Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha, Balkovec. She went to Creighton University for further education but was later transferred to the University of New Mexico, where she earned a degree in exercise science. Rachel studies human body movements and got her Master’s degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University. She has also pursued a second master’s degree at Vrije University in the Netherlands.

Rachel started playing sports when she was a school-going kid, also she was an active sports player in her university. She officially began her career in 2012 with Saint Louis Cardinals as a temporary contract strength and conditioning coach and later took over as a full-time strength and conditioning coach. In 2016, she was hired as a Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator by the Houston Astros, and later she got promoted as the Class AA Corpus Christi Hooks’ strength and conditioning coach in 2018.

While pursuing her second master’s degree she served for the Dutch baseball and softball programs as an assistant hitting coach. In spring training 2020, she became the first woman to serve as the New York Yankees’ hitting coach. Recently, she was announced to be the first-ever female Manager of the Low-A Tampa Tarpons. She has overcome many gender base hurdles to make her career, as a woman she had to struggle a lot for getting the position of a coach in male baseball teams.
