Career

Orla Guerin began her professional life in 1987 when she joined RTE News, and before that, she worked for Sunday Tribune. While at RTE News, she was the youngest foreign correspondent when she had the chance to go to Eastern Europe at 23 in 1990.

She worked for RTE until 1994 and reported for various countries, states, or places, including central Europe, the former Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Sarajevo. She also worked for RTE Radio and had a report representation from Eastern Europe, winning a Jacob’s Award in 1992.

In 1994, she left RTE and ran an Irish Labour Party for the European Parliament elections, where she was supposed to be a candidate. Orla Guerin, who was then like an illiterate personality for the political parties and their knowledge, was hand-picked by then Labour Party leader Dick Spring. She did not win the elections or any seat at the party convention. However, Spring insisted that she should add her name to the ballot. Again, she did not win the heart and received only 6% of the votes.

In 1995, Orla Guerin joined the BBC as a news correspondent. In January 1996, she was posted to the West Coast of America (based in Los Angeles), where she reported on several stories, including the Oscars. She worked as a BBC’s Southern Europe correspondent in Rome. She worked for the designation from July 1996 to June 2000. During this time, she had regular reporting on the Kosovo conflict.

In 1999, the Serb Armed Forces expelled Orla Guerin from the regional capital, Pristina, but still, she had her reporting on the plight of the refugees fleeing the border. After the Nato Forces took control over the matter, she re-entered Kosovo and she started reporting on the return of the thousands of refugees who were forced to leave their homes.
