Hataoka was born on 13 January 1999 in Kasama, Ibaraki, Japan. She was named after the United States space program, NASA, by her parents who were fans of astronomy. Hataoka began playing golf when she was three years old and quickly showed her aptitude and love for the game.

Hataoka won a number of amateur competitions both in Japan and overseas, including the 2016 Japan Women’s Open Golf Championship, a significant LPGA of Japan Tour event.
