Early Life

Matthew James Klotz was born on May 24, 1996. Klotz was raised by his parents in the city of Cameron Park in California. He was born to parents Dean and Linda Klotz. The eldest member of Klotz’s family is Stephanie.

Matt Klotz credits his parents and older sister with influencing his decision to pursue swimming as a profession. They made sure that his being deaf wouldn’t stop him from reaching for the stars. His family has always been there for him, loving and encouraging him.

Matt studied at Louisiana State University from 2016 until 2020. He swam for the varsity team in high school. As a senior, Matt swam for the school’s record-setting 200-meter freestyle relay team that competed in the Southeastern Conference Championships.

Matt Klotz Career

Klotz rose to prominence after competing at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Bulgaria. He won two gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke events, as well as a bronze in the 400m individual medley.

He continued his successful Deaflympic career by winning 5 medals, including 3 gold medals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke events at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics. During the 2018 US National Swimming Championship, he broke two deaf world marks.

One of them was his own record in the men’s 50m backstroke event, which he set at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics with a time of 26.26 seconds. With a time of 19.77 seconds, he became the first deaf swimmer in history to complete the 50 meters of backstroke in under 20 seconds, thus resetting his own world record.

In the men’s 50-meter freestyle event, he clocked in at 23 seconds, a new deaf world record that beat out the previous mark held by veteran American swimmer Marcus Titus by 0.06 seconds. He also holds the national record in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke and the 200-meter and 100-meter freestyle.

As a result of his efforts, he has earned a spot in the upcoming 2019 ICSD World Deaf Swimming Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Klotz is the first deaf/hard-of-hearing competitor in the show’s history, and would be participating in the upcoming 25th season of Big Brother.
