Kelly Brough Biography

Kelly Brough is acknowledged as a Candidate for Denver Mayor. In August 2022, she decided to walk a unique path to become Denver’s next mayor. Throughout her career, Kelly worked in various financial and political roles with the city of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver. She recently co-chaired the Housing Affordability Strategy Group convened by United States Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper.

Early Life

Kelly Brough was born in December 1963 in Shelby, Montana. Later, she moved to Washington, D.C., where her biological father was murdered. For a few years, her mother raised her. Later, her mother remarried a pipeline worker. Her stepfather earned a degree in diesel mechanics and found fulfilling employment as a manager. Later, her stepfather sustained an injury that forced him to leave his job. During that time, her mother served in the U.S. Postal Service to put her family on a stable path.

Talking about her education, she earned a primary school education. After that, she enrolled at Montana State University-Bozeman in 1983, majoring in B.S. – Sociology. While in high school, she worked at a Dairy Queen and saved up $10,000 to pay for Montana State University fees. She graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Later, she moved to Denver, where she pursued her Master of Business Administration (MBA). Later, she earned her MBA degree (from 1987 – 1989) at the University of Colorado Denver.

Kelly Brough Career

Kelly started a consulting business and ran a nationally recognized leadership program, which helped teens facing significant obstacles in life. She worked for the city and county of Denver, including serving as a legislative analyst for the City Council. In 2003, she was the campaign manager for Susan Casey’s mayoral bid. The same year, she joined Denver’s Career Services Authority and worked as Director of Human Resources in Denver, Colorado, United States.

In 2005, Kelly rose to prominence when she became Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor John Hickenlooper. Later, she worked as a Chief Of Staff. During that period, she worked on the annual general fund budget. She also assisted in converging financial functions and creating Denver’s first CFO. She also passed and implemented a $550 million capital investment in infrastructure with voter approval in 2008. At that time, she was the political adviser to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Gov. Bill Ritter. In Sep 2009, she became President and CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, a Nonprofit Civic and Social Organization.

During that time, she beat out five other top candidates, including the chamber’s executive vice president, Tom Clark, who runs the economic development operation. As a CEO, she successfully advocated for business-friendly legislation and policies. She handles highly controversial government issues, including immigration policy, workforce development, and trade of oil or gas regulations. She also focuses on economic development operations, LGBTQ rights, health care, pension funding, and housing schemes. In Sep 2021, she left the position. From Dec 2021 to Aug 2022, she worked as Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. At one point in her career, she served as the trustee for Colorado Mesa University.
