Katie Couric was born January 7, 1957 in Arlington, Virginia. She is the daughter of John Martin Couric Jr. a news editor and a public relations executive and Elinor Tullie (n.e. Hene) a homemaker and writer part-time. She was brought up in her father’s Protestant tradition, and her mother was a Jew who was later converted to Presbyterianism.
Couric went to the local (Arlington) public schools, Jamestown Elementary, Williamsburg Middle School, and Yorktown High School, where she was an active student, including as a cheerleader. During high school, she had an internship at an all-news radio station in Washington, D.C.
In 1975, she entered the University of Virginia, where she pursued her major in American Studies and graduated in 1979. At UVA she worked in a variety of positions at the student newspaper The Cavalier Daily and was also chosen to spend her final year on The Lawn.
Career
Katie Couric started her journalism right after college. In 1979, she started her career working in the ABC news bureau in Washington, D.C., as a desk assistant. Throughout the early 1980s she was employed at CNN as an assignment editor and then resorted to reporting on such stations as WTVJ in Miami and later WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., where she was first recognized for her reporting.
