Early Life

Jim Larranaga was born on October 2, 1949, in the Bronx and was raised along with his six siblings. His grandfather was from Cuba and was the owner of Cuba’s Por Larranaga cigar company. Jim went to Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens. He started playing basketball in high school under coach Jack Curran and graduated in 1967. Jim got into Providence College and continued to play basketball. As a senior, he was the captain of the basketball team.

In the 1970-71 season, he led Providence College to a 20-8 record. The team also made an NIT appearance. Jim was an outstanding player in his college. By the end of his graduation, his score was 1,258 making him the fifth all-time leading scorer. He was the top scorer throughout his sophomore and junior year. In 1969 he was named New England’s Division I sophomore of the year. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in economics. He was later recognized in the Providence College Hall of fame in 1991.

Jim Larranaga Career

After his college graduation Jim started working as an assistant coach to Terry Holland at Davidson College. He worked at Davidson for five years and during that time the team won three regular-season Southern Conference Titles. He then transferred to Belgium to work as a player coach and stayed there for only one season. In 1977 he moved to the U.S. and took the job of head coach at American International College, a Division II program. Under his mentorship, the team went from losing records for years to winning against North-eastern University with a 28-25 record.

In 1979 he joined the University of Virginia as the head coach and was reunited with his former mentor Terry Holland there. Jim worked for seven seasons and joined Bowling Green State University and worked there as the head coach from 1986 to 1997. He improved the team’s ranking during his tenure and led the team to many national-level conferences.

Jim was named the conference’s Coach of the year in his final season at Bowling Green. He has also worked at George Mason for fourteen years as the head coach from 1997 to 2011. By that time he became a well-known basketball coach. During his time at George Mason, he won CAA coach of the year twice, in 1999 and 2011. In 2011 he finally joined the University of Miami. He coached the Hurricanes and made it a team of national prominence. Jim led the team to win the ACC regular season title. During his tenure Hurricanes won several tournaments.
