Jay Johnson is the head baseball coach of the LSU Tigers, having previously played college baseball and coached at Point Loma Nazarene, Nevada, and Arizona. Jay Johnson has been hired by Louisiana State University to replace Paul Mainieri.
In his debut season, Johnson led the Wildcats to a 49-24 record and reached the final game of the College World Series before losing to Coastal Carolina. He also led Arizona back to Omaha this past season but lost in two games. Despite this, he was named Pac-12’s coach of the year and will now take over at LSU.
Johnson has a head coaching record of 316-172 with a postseason record of 17-7. However, the Wildcats struggled in the two seasons prior to the canceled 2020 college baseball season, going 66-46 and missing the postseason both years.
Early Life
Jack Johnson was born on April 20, 1977, and grew up in Oroville, California, and loved playing baseball. He played for his high school varsity team and was a talented player. After graduating in 1995, he went to Shasta College to pursue baseball. Johnson enhanced his talents as a second baseman and became an important player for Shasta’s baseball team, known for his powerful batting average and fielding abilities over two years.
Jay transferred from Shasta College to Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego County to complete his college education. Johnson was a standout second baseman for PLNU’s Sea Lions baseball team in his senior year of 2000.

Johnson started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Point Loma Nazarene in 2001 while completing his bachelor’s degree. He later became the head coach and led the team to a division championship and #6 national ranking in the NAIA. In 2005, Johnson joined the University of San Diego as an assistant coach.
During his time there, the team won three West Coast Conference championships and participated in four NCAA Division I Baseball Championships with Johnson on staff. In 2013, he became head coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack basketball team.
Johnson led the Wildcats to their seventh College World Series appearance in 2016, but they lost to Coastal Carolina in the championship series. During his two-year tenure, he led the team to a 72-42 record, and in 2015 they won their first-ever Mountain West title with a record of 22-7.
The team was ranked in the top 25 for most of that season, and Johnson was named Mountain West Coach of the Year. Johnson has left Arizona and is now the head coach of the LSU Tigers as of June 24, 2021.
