Jack Smith Biography

Jack Smith is an American lawyer who is the man behind the indictment of Donald Trump in the Capitol Attacks of 6th January 2021. Jack has worked for the US Department of Justice (DOJ) as an assistant US attorney, an acting US attorney, and the section chief for public integrity. Additionally, he served as the principal prosecutor at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, a tribunal at The Hague that was established to look into and try war crimes committed during the Kosovo War.

Early Life

Smith was born in the United States in 1969. John L. “Jack” Smith was born to American parents and raised in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, New York. He hasn’t given the media any information about himself or his family. He graduated from Liverpool High School in 1987, where he was a football and baseball player. The State University of New York at Oneonta awarded him a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, and Harvard Law School awarded him a Juris Doctor in 1994.

After graduating, Smith started working for the New York County District Attorney’s office. He was a member of the office’s Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence Units while employed as an Assistant District Attorney. In 1999, he then started working for the Eastern District of New York’s US Attorney’s Office. Smith prosecuted the police officers who sodomized Abner Louima in the office and got Ronell Wilson, who killed two New York Police Department officers, to get the death penalty.

Smith served as an employee of the International Criminal Court’s Office of the Prosecutor from 2008 to 2010. He directed the inquiries into war crimes. He was appointed to lead the Public Integrity Section (PIS) of the US Department of Justice in 2010. During his five years as PIS chief, Smith prosecuted a number of corruption cases, including those against Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, U.S. Representative Rick Renzi, and CIA agent Jeffrey Sterling, who divulged state secrets.

He was appointed an assistant US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2015. Following the resignation of David Rivera in March 2017, Smith served as acting US Attorney until Donald Q. Cochran was nominated in September. In 2017, he was named vice president and head of litigation at Hospital Corporation of America. Smith was appointed as the head prosecutor for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague on May 7, 2018.

The Chambers, an independent judicial institution based in The Hague, were established to investigate and prosecute serious crimes committed during the Kosovo conflict. Smith’s four-year term involved leading a team of legal professionals in gathering evidence and bringing criminal charges against individuals suspected of war crimes and other offenses.

His appointment marked a significant step towards justice and accountability for the victims of the conflict. He was looking into war crimes committed during the Kosovo War, like Salih Mustafa’s case. Smith was appointed to a second term on May 8, 2022, after taking up the position on September 11, 2018.

Investigation on Trump

On November 18, 2022, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland named Smith special counsel to preside over the criminal investigations into Donald Trump’s responses to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 and Trump’s handling and storage of government records, including classified documents, at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He first operated from the Netherlands while recuperating from a shattered leg sustained when he was hit by a scooter while riding. Smith subsequently traveled back to the USA. After a few months, Smith charged Trump.
