Hubert Davis Biography

Hubert Davis is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association who currently serves as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, his alma mater.

Early life

Hubert Davis was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the United States on May 17, 1970. There are no details regarding Hubert’s parents as he has not once mentioned them. Though it is known that, Hubert is the nephew of Walter Davis, who is another former NBA player and six-time NBA All-Star with the Phoenix Suns. From a young age, Davis was attracted to the sport and started playing basketball since middle school days. He even made it to the high school team where he averaged 28.0 points per game.

Hubert went to Lake Braddock Secondary in Burke, Virginia from where he completed his high school education, and then later in 1988, Davis went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated in 1992 from the University with a degree in criminal justice.

Hubert Davis Career

Davis was still in high school, he averaged 28.0 points per game in his senior year. In 1988 he started going to the University of North Carolina where he still holds the record for the highest career 3 point percentage in UNC history. In his senior year, he averaged 21.4 points per game and in the 1922 NBA Drafts, Davis was selected with the 20th overall pick by New York Knicks. Hubert remained with the New York Knicks for nearly 4 years and then was traded to the Toronto Raptors prior to the 1996-97 season. After a few seasons, he spent enough time with teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and New Jersey Nets. In 2004, he played his final game for New Jersey, finishing with career averages of 8.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.

From 2008 onwards, Hubert began working at ESPN as a college basketball analyst till the time in 2012 it was announced that he will be the assistant coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team under Roy Williams. To this date, he is the coach and in 2017, he even helped NCAA Men’s basketball win the tournament. Recently in April 2021, the head coach at North Carolina, Roy Williams retired after being with the team for 33 seasons. This could mean that Hubert who is the assistant coach and former standout player at UNC might take up the spot, however, there are other options as well.
