Geno Auriemma is the head coach for the Uconn Huskies Women’s Basketball team. Geno is probably the longest-serving coach in the college history who has been serving the Huskies since 1985. Under the coaching of Geno, 26 players were named WBCA All-Americans, totaling 46 recognitions, with 14 National Player of the Year awards.

Geno Auriemma Early Life, Education & Childhood
Geno Auriemma was born on 23rd March 1954 and he is 70 years old. His family emigrated from Montella in Southern Italy, where he was born and where his family stayed for years. He emigrated from Italy to Norristown, Pennsylvania, when he was seven years old.
There, Geno spent his whole childhood until he taught himself the language, English. After that, he went to the United States. He had all his primary and higher education in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He received his graduation degree from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 1977.
After that, in 1978 and 1979, he was hired by Saint Joseph’s University, Pennsylvania, as an assistant coach. Before having this designation, he was coaching the women’s basketball team at Bishop McDevitt HS in Wyncote, Pennsylvania.
He then had a two-year break and started serving as an assistant coach at his former high school, Bishop Kenrick. Then, in 1981, he became an assistant coach at the University of Virginia for their Cavaliers women’s team.
He arrived USA and became a a naturalized United States citizen in 1994 at the age of 40. For many years, Auriemma and his wife, Kathy, began to live in a home in Avalon, New Jersey, to stay near their parent’s house in the Philadelphia area.

University of Connecticut
Geno Auriemma arrived and began his coaching career with the university in 1985. Before he arrived at the university, the team had only one winning season in history. The reason behind Geno’s appointment was to provide better guidance to women’s sports. After he was hired, the university quickly rose to prominence.
In the first season, the team saw a loss with 12-15 scores, but it was the only losing game during the coaching season by Auriemma. After that, the team Huskies marked the beginning of the first-ever 20-win season, the first NCAA Tournament appearance, and the first conference title. In his presence, the Huskies team has appeared in every NCAA game since 1989.
At the end of the season [2014 to 2015], the winning percentage was 87.3 during the time of Auriemma’s head coaching career with the Huskies. This percentage was the highest among the active coaches of that time in the Division I category. Under his guidance, the team won eleven national championships and reached the final four 20 times.
World Championship Games
Geno Auriemma also coached the United States women’s national basketball team from 2009 through 2016 as a head coach. He led the team to appear in the 2010 and 2014 World Championships and both went undefeated. The team also went undefeated at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2006, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
