He played 55 games in which he recorded batting a combined .273 with four home runs and 25 runs batted in (RBIs). The next season in 2017, in total he played 117 games for the Fort Wayne TinCaps Class A Midwest League and 14 games for the San Antonio Missions of the Class AA Texas League and recorded a combined .278 batting average with 22 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases.

In 2018, Fernando emerged as one of the top players in the minor leagues but unfortunately after playing for almost 88 games, he underwent season-ending surgery for a broken left thumb and ligament damage. In spite of the fact, he returned to play for the winter season from Estrellas. The next season, Tatis was ranked as one of the top three prospects in baseball and made his debut with San Diego Padres on March 26, 2019, which made him the first player in Padres to start on Opening Day.
