Fernando Gabriel Tatís Medina (Fernando Tatis Jr.) is a Dominican professional baseball shortstop who plays for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2019 he made his opening debut with the Padres.
Fernando Tatís Jr. was born on January 2, 1999, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic to father Fernando Sr. and mother Maria. His father is also a baseball player who played in MLB for 11 years. In 2015, Fernando was signed as an international free agent from the Dominican Prospect League by Chicago White Sox. A year later he was traded to the Arizona Padres the Rookie-level Arizona League for James Shields. He played 55 games in which he recorded batting a combined .273 with four home runs and 25 runs batted in (RBIs). The next season in 2017, in total he played 117 games for the Fort Wayne TinCaps Class A Midwest League and 14 games for the San Antonio Missions of the Class AA Texas League and recorded a combined .278 batting average with 22 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases.
In 2018, Fernando emerged as one of the top players in the minor leagues but unfortunately after playing for almost 88 games, he underwent season-ending surgery for a broken left thumb and ligament damage. In spite of the fact, he returned to play for the winter season from Estrellas. The next season, Tatis was ranked as one of the top three prospects in baseball and made his debut with San Diego Padres on March 26, 2019, which made him the first player in Padres to start on Opening Day. Fernando was a part of a four-game streak for the Padres in the 2020 season and he also helped his team by bringing them back in the winning position by hitting two home runs against the Dodgers.
