Dylan Crews Biography

Dylan Crews is a college baseball outfielder for the LSU Tigers. Crews grew up in Central Florida, where he attended and played baseball for four years on the varsity team at Lake Mary High School. After finishing high school he passed on the opportunity in favor of attending LSU. Top team management will pick Dylan in the top three picks in the MLB Draft 2023.

Dylan improved his game drastically in his freshman year and showed his hitting prowess. He quickly placed high on various SEC leaderboards. As a sophomore, he was a unanimous first-team All-American and a co-SEC Player of the Year. Crews played college baseball for the United States for two years. Crews is widely regarded as a top prospect for the 2023 MLB draft, and he is widely expected to be picked first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Early Life

Dylan Gray Crews was born on February 26, 2002, to George and Kim Crews. Kim works in the medical field, and George runs a commercial printing company. Crews went to high school at Lake Mary in Lake Mary, Florida. He was a member of USA Baseball’s gold medal-winning 18U team and 14U team during his amateur career. In 2019, he stole 15 bases as a junior and hit.389 at the plate.

He participated in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game that summer at Wrigley Field. Dylan backed out of the professional race a week before the draft, saying he wanted to honor his pledge to play baseball for Louisiana State University instead.

Dylan Crews Career

Crews started at right field for LSU as a freshman in 2021. His season stats were a.362 batting average, 18 home runs, 42 RBIs, 16 doubles, and 12 steals in 63 starts. He broke Mike Fontenot’s record of 17 home runs as a freshman at LSU with his 18. Dylan was recognized as a first-team All-American by Baseball America and Perfect Game was voted to make him their National Freshman of the Year.

He made the postseason roster for the US national Baseball team. For a short time, he was a member of the Florida Collegiate Summer League team, the Sanford River Rats. The year 2022 marked Crews’s move to center field. He shared the award for baseball’s top performer in the SEC with Sonny DiChiara. He appeared in 62 games all year long, hitting.349/.463/.691 with 22 home runs and 72 runs batted in.

MLB Draft 2023

When the 2023 MLB draft rolls around, Crews will likely be one of the first names picked. According to MLB.com’s MLB Pipeline ranking, Crews is the best draft prospect and will be picked within the top three overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Three major baseball publications Baseball America, FanSided, and Perfect Game, all had Crews going in the top spot. According to FanGraphs, he is the third-best draft prospect.

Crews have been labeled as “a plus hitter with plus power” with a “quick right-handed stroke” in his MLB.com draft profile, but he has been criticized for his tendency to strike out on changeups. According to the website, Crews is an “at least average” outfielder who has good arm strength, decent range, and the potential to play center field at the major league level.

The five-tool player is one way to define Crews. Crews’ readiness for college, according to former LSU head coach Paul Mainieri, was on par with that of former Tigers DJ LeMahieu and Alex Bregman.
