Condoleezza Rice is a politician, diplomat, and author from the United States. She was the first African American woman to hold the office of United States Secretary of State, which she did from 2005 to 2009. Early Life
Condoleezza Rice was born to John, a minister and dean of students, and Angelena, a high school teacher, in Birmingham, Alabama in 1954. She is their only child. Rice’s formative years were spent in the vibrant Titusville district of Birmingham. Later, she resided on the campus of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, where her father held a professorship. This upbringing in close proximity to academia undoubtedly played a role in shaping Rice’s intellectual environment and fostering her educational journey.
Rice attended St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic school, after her family relocated to Denver, Colorado, in 1967. She graduated high school at 16 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Denver by the time she was 19. She obtained her MA in the same discipline from the University of Notre Dame in 1975.
Rice first entered the workforce at the State Department as an intern in 1977, during the Carter administration. She began her studies in Russian at Moscow State University in 1979 and later went on to intern at the RAND Corporation in California. Later, in 1981, she received her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Denver. She was also a fellow at Stanford University’s Arms Control and Disarmament Program at the time, which marked the start of her career-long association with Stanford.
Condoleezza Rice Career
Condoleezza is presently the director of Stanford University’s Hoover Institute. In the 1980s, she began her career as an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University, where she would go on to become known as an expert on the Soviet Union. Rice was then asked by former US Air Force officer and National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft to serve as his Soviet specialist on the US National Security Council.
Rice worked for Chevron Corporation under George P. Shultz before returning to Stanford in 1992. During her time there, she visited Kazakhstan as a member of the board. She was also on the board of directors of Transamerica Corporation in 1991. Rice was a special assistant to the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the United States in 1986. Later, she was the head of Soviet Affairs in the National Security Council during the presidency of George H. W. Bush.
She was appointed National Security Advisor for the United States in November 2000 and stayed in that position until 2005. She was also an early adopter of the policy of “transformational diplomacy.” Rice has written several books, most of which are about politics. These include No Higher Honour, Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom, Political Risk: Facing the Threat of Global Insecurity in the Twenty-First Century, and Inside the Mind of George W. Bush: 43rd President of the United States of America.
