Brian James Dutcher was born on October 30, 1959, to Jim and Marilyn Dutcher. He has three younger sisters with whom he grew up, Diane, Judi & Barbara. Dutcher went to Jefferson High School and got a degree in physical education from Minnesota in 1982. He worked for his father, then the head coach of Gopher, while studying. After graduation, he spent one season at Apple Valley Minnesota High School before becoming a graduate assistant at Illinois, where he earned his master’s degree. Dutcher assisted coach Lou Henson in leading the Fighting Illini to a Big Ten championship, two Sweet 16 appearances, and one regional final during their time in Champaign.
