Alexander Volkanovski Biography

Alexander Volkanovski is an Australia-based professional mixed martial artist. He is currently signed to UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) where he has attained the title of UFC Featherweight Champion. Alexander remained AFC (Australian Fighting Championship) Featherweight Champion and ranks at #4 in UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Early Life

Alexander Volkanovski was born on 29th September 1988, in Warilla, Australia to his parents who belonged to mixed ethnicity. His father is from a small village named Beranci while his mother is from Greece. He began training for Greco-Roman wrestling at a very young age and won the national title on his name by the age of 12. Later at the age of 14, he decided to give up wrestling and focus on rugby league as a front-rower. He went to Lake Illawarra High School and attained his education there only. After graduation, he started working on his skills and as a concreter.

Alexander Volkanovski Career

Early Years

Alexander Volkanovski started his passion for fighting as an amateur at middleweight. He participated in numerous MMA organizations in the Oceania region of Asia from 2012 to 2016 before signing his contract with UFC. He won the title of PXC (Pacific Xtreme Combat) and two titles of AFC Featherweight. Volkanovski maintained a record of 13-1 with 10 straight wins before joining UFC as his final place where he could fight professionally.

Appearance with UFC

Volkanovski performed for his promotional debut on 26th November 2016. Later, he increased the streak of his win to 11 while fighting against Yusuke Kasuya at UFC Fight Night 101. After the fight in the press conference, he announced that he would drop lightweight to featherweight for his next level of fight. Once, Volkanovski was expected to fight with Michel Quinones on 19th February 2017 at UFC Fight Night 105. But the bout was later scrapped because of the injury to Michel Quinones as no replacement was found that time. Volkanovski returned to featherweight and stood against Mizuto Hirota on 11th June 2017 where he won the fight by unanimous decision.

UFC Featherweight Championship

On 14th December 2019, Volkanovski stood against Max Halloway at UFC 245 where he won the fight via unanimous decision. Volkanovski stood in a rematch against Max Holloway in the first defense title on 11th June 2020 at UFC 251. Later, he won the fight via split decision where the outcome became the controversy for the media outlets and mixed martial artist personalities including Dana White and former referee and creator named John McCarthy. Volkanovski’s second title defense fight was scheduled on 27th March 2021 against Brian Ortega.

Although, the fight was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. Later to which Volkanovski tweeted over the web saying that he was tested positive for COVID-19. On 2nd April 2021, it was made public that Brian Ortega and Volkanovski would be the coaches for the UF 29 at ESPN+ where the contestants will be featured at bantamweight and middleweight. On 25th September 2021, Volkanovski is scheduled to fight against Brian Ortega at UFC 266 for UFC Featherweight Championship.

Personal Life

Volkanovski has been a devoted father to his two young daughters named Ariana (4) and Airlie (2). He has balanced his fatherhood with conquering the toughest competitions on the field. In one of his interviews, he said that he had got a tattoo that reads like “Family”. He was pretty young when he became the father of two children. He thinks of himself to be a family man who has something significant in his life to make himself proud of. When he was young he used to think that one day he would have four kids. Even today, he sometimes thinks to try for another kid after having two children. The time when was about to get into UFC, it was hard for him from a financial point of view. Money-wise, he wanted to make the right decision at the right top as after choosing UFC.

He would have been left with no way to think about his family especially his wife who was always a motivation for him. Alexander said that people often talk about making a “legacy” and fighting career for him but he wanted to do all those things for his family only. He always wanted to be successful and to achieve the opportunities and took up his family with himself. He always wanted to be the best. Volkanovski married Emma and has two young daughters. He appeared as a coach for the MMA reality show in Malaysia. There is a nickname for him, i.e., “The Great”. Because of his paternal and maternal heritage, he used this nickname to donate that he belongs to his family and the same heritage.
