She transferred from Louisiana last season, ready to show she could handle Power Four competition. So far, she’s delivered. Landry has pitched 160 2/3 innings with a 2.00 ERA and 165 strikeouts. Her strong season earned her a spot on the All-SEC First Team.

Early Life

Sam Landry was born in Houston, Texas, on March 5, 2003. Sam Landry grew up with her parents, John and Nichole Landry, and five siblings. She has four sisters—Chelsie Bradlie, Alyssa, Charleigh, and Lakynn—and one brother named Stephen. During her time at Barbers Hill High School, she gave back to her community in big ways.

She helped organize softball games for local police and firefighters, mentored younger players, and took part in the Adopt a Family program for Christmas. Sam was also a standout on the field. Extra Innings Softball ranked her the No. 4 high school prospect in the country. She pitched all four years at Barbers Hill in Mont Belvieu, Texas.

In 2021, she was one of only 40 players picked to play in the PGF High School Senior All-American Game. In the classroom, Sam works just as hard. She’s majoring in biology on a pre-med track and hopes to become an anesthesiologist. Her long-term goal is to earn a doctorate.

Sam Landry Career

Her prep career was capped by a Texas Class 5A state victory set up when she struck out 12 batters and tossed a one-hit complete game shutout in the semifinal round. During her senior season, she went 17-1 with a 0.40 ERA and struck out 252 hitters in 121 innings thrown.

She won recognition at all levels (District MVP, First Team All-Greater Houston, 2019 TGCA All-State Team) for her pitching throughout the 2019 campaign, striking out 189 batters. Sam threw 65 strikeouts and was voted Barbers Hill’s Defensive MVP during the COVID-19 truncated 2020 season.

She had a stellar summer of 2020 for Houston Hotshots Premier-Dumezich, recording 170 strikeouts against top competition at ASA 18U Nationals, and was named to the Extra Inning Softball 18U All-Summer Team. Sam led Louisiana’s pitching staff in victories in both conference play (12) and overall (20) during her first year of college in 2022.

She led all Sun Belt pitchers in conference victory percentage (12-1,.923). She also recorded a nine-game winning streak for herself between March 19 and April 20, making eight starts with one earned run or less.

Through her first 10 starts in SBC competition, she was unbeaten (8-0), struck out at least five hitters 13 times, and reached double digits three times. She dominated the Troy series, taking two victories while allowing only one run, four hits, and a.089 average over 13 innings and pitching a combined shutout of Texas State.

Oklahoma

Sam Landry came to Oklahoma with a strong reputation. Extra Innings Softball ranked her as the No. 4 recruit in the 2021 class. She also made the roster for the PGF High School Senior All-American Game, where only 40 top players were chosen.

Landry is having the best season of her softball career. She leads the Sooners as their top starting pitcher this year. In 24 starts, she has thrown 16 complete games and racked up 170 strikeouts.

Her earned run average stands at an impressive 1.92. Oklahoma gave her the chance to grow into a star. That decision paid off when Athletes Unlimited picked her first in their college draft. This dream might not have come true without her time as a Sooner.
