Carla McGhee is an American personality who is a former basketball player and was committed to the University of Tennessee during her collegiate years. Back in 1987, she suffered a severe accident that was originally a car crash because of which she went into a coma for 47 hours. She was told that she would never be able to play basketball again in her life. But her courage, strength, and stamina made her earn a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics while playing basketball with the whole team.
Early Life
Carla McGhee was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1968, making her around 54 years old as of 2022. Carla used to share her infancy and childhood stage with her three siblings including two sisters Nita Davis and Alley Williams, and one brother Freeman McCoyï. Also, it is said that she was adopted by the family, having her adopted guardians named Claire and Dennis Davisï. Besides, her biological mother’s name is Joyce McCoyï. It is said that Carla donated one of her gold medals (notably the Olympics gold medal) to the community center so that local kids could see the trophy or medal and could learn from it.
Carla McGhee Career
During the early years of her basketball career, she was a member of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers and while being associated with the team, she earned two national championships at Tennessee- one in 1987 and another in 1989 out of three major tournament appearances. For one season, she played her basketball session with ABL and stayed committed to Atlanta Glory, where she made a record of 8.2 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game in 26 games. Overall, she played six pro seasons abroad, from 1990-91 and 1998 with Germany, from 1991-93 with Spain, and 1993-95 with Italy. In her whole career of basketball, she played in WNBA for the Orlando Miracle for around four years from 1999 to 2002.
Appearance at USA Basketball Nationals
Carla appeared at the 1987 William Jones Cup competition in Taipei, Taiwan after joining Team USA. All the first seven games were won by the US team and eventually, the US team won a gold medal- which was one of the great achievements for Carla McGhee. During the game, the US team was down at halftime in the opening game while the US stood against Japan, and later the US came back as the strongest team in the second half of the game helping to earn 15 points by Cambell. During the event, McGhee made a record of around 7.4 points per game out of the 7 games in total.
Carla was selected as the strongest personality for the US team and was invited to attend the 1994 World Championships. The event’s primary round was about to be held in Hobart, Tasmania while the final round was planned to be held in Sydney, Australia. The US team involving McGhee earned the winning streak for all the initial six games and has the semi-final match with Brazil. On one hand, Brazil’s Hortência Marcari came out to be the strongest contender from the side of the team, and in the finals, the Brazil team had an overall score of 110–107 which came out to be in the favor of Brazil only. On the other hand, the US team regrouped to face Australia and earn the overall score of 100–95 whereas the US team left to earn only a bronze medal.
Rise to Fame
Again during the 1995 USA Women’s Pan American Games, Carla was selected as one of the participants of the team but during that time only four teams were committed to participating so the event was eventually canceled. During the season 1996, Carla was again selected for the US team and the 1996 Olympics was supposed to be held in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
During the event’s selection, the USA team won the pool play games by large margins. The USA had a major victory over Australia and featured various records made by Teresa Edwards, Johnson, and Lisa Leslie. Team USA began the games with a very strong contender hitting 71.9 percent of their field goals. The USA team caught the first 8 points of the second half in their name and had overall scores around 111–87, and eventually won a gold medal. During the event, McGhee made a record of 3.1 points per game.
