Early Life

Macario was born in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, on October 4, 1999. Macario began playing football at the age of four, following in her older brother Steve’s steps. Flamengo, a local football team in São Luís, was where she first started playing. She only stayed for about 6 months before going to the Cruzeiro football school. She relocated to Brasilia, Brazil’s capital, along with her family when she was 7. Catarina was a member of the Santos football team in Brasilia until December 2011, until she relocated to the United States.

Catarina always had played for men’s teams in Brazil and only began playing for women’s teams after moving to the United States. Macario moved to San Diego, California, with her father and brother when she was 12 years old and spoke no English, to pursue her passion of playing soccer. Her mother, a doctor, stayed in Brazil to help maintain the family financially. She broke the ECNL’s all-time goalscoring record with 165 goals while playing for the San Diego Surf as a young player.

Education: Stanford University

Macario committed to Stanford University on February 1, 2017, to play collegiately. She played 25 games as a freshman in 2017, scoring 17 goals and grabbing 16 assists. She was named “ESPNW Player of the Year,” “TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman of the Year,” “Pac-12 Forward of the Year,” and “Pac-12 Freshman of the Year” as a result of her performance this year. In her second year in 2018, Macario scored 14 goals and added 8 assists in 19 games.

She was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year on December 11, 2018. Macario stated on January 8, 2021, that she would skip her senior year at Stanford to pursue her professional career. Lyon signed Macario on a 2.5-year contract on January 12, 2021. On February 6, 2021, she made her first appearance for Lyon in Division 1 Féminine, replacing Amandine Henry in the 37th minute against Montpellier. Macario is eligible to represent both Brazil and the United States at the international level. She was selected to represent the United States of America at several junior levels.

Macario stated that she wanted to represent the United States at the senior level, despite being approached by the Brazilian Football Confederation on multiple occasions. Macario was called up to represent the United States at the senior level for the first time on October 8, 2020, albeit she couldn’t play until FIFA cleared her. She proclaimed her American citizenship on Twitter later the same day. Macario was granted permission to represent the United States internationally by FIFA on January 13, 2021, according to U.S. Soccer.

International

Macario made her debut for the United States on January 18, 2021, at halftime of a friendly match against Colombia, and became the first converted American to play for the US senior women’s team. On January 22, 2021, she made her maiden international appearance in another friendly against Colombia, scoring her first international goal. Macario was selected to the United States’ squad for the 2020 Summer Olympics on June 23, 2021.
