Melissa Lucio Biography

Melissa Lucio is an American woman who belongs to Hispanic descent and has been sentenced to death in Texas. The court has produced allegations of capital murder against her after the death of her two-year-old daughter named Mariah. Mariah, on being examined, was found to be in a fetal condition with various stages of bruising and injuries on her head, and contusions of the kidneys, lungs, and spinal cord. According to the prosecutor, the injuries that were made to Mariah were the results of physical abuse while Lucio’s attorney says that the injuries were made to the daughter because she fell down the stairs two days before her death.

Melissa Lucio Early Life

Melissa Lucio was born on 18th July 1968 in Lubbock, Texas. Although the official documents say that Lucio was born in 1968, her relatives and closest members say that she was born in 1969. Lucio’s father died when Lucio was an infant and her family moved to Rio Grande Valley when Lucio was nearly 3 to 4 years old. Lucios’s life was not as simple and smooth as other children’s. According to Lucio, she was once sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend.

At the time of the abuse, she was merely 6 years old and could not do anything, but the conditions remained the same for at least two years. Lucio was married at the age of 16 and she produced five children with her husband, who used to abuse Lucio all the time while being in the relationship. She said that she was all the time sexually abused by her first husband who later left her along with five children and parted away.

Death of her Daughter

According to an interrogation with Lucio regarding the death of her youngest child of that time, Mariah fell down the stairs while the family was moving homes back in February 2007. The daughter, who was a toddler at that time, had to go through a physical disability and was unstable while walking. Two days later, Mariah went to take a nap and did not wake up. On the other hand, Lucio said that she was pressured to have false statements regarding the allegations. Melissa Lucio, who maintained her innocence for nearly 14 years, was immediately taken under interrogation and was asserted nearly 100 times until she was manipulated by the police officers to take the responsibility for Mariah’s injury.

Ms. Lucio was taken for questioning and was interrogated for nearly five hours, at the time she was pregnant and was going through a shock of the loss of her young child Mariah. The research says that Mariah was physically abused and people like Ms. Lucio often agree to the conditions which they never convicted while being under huge pressure from the majority of people. The state of Texas has scheduled the execution of the case of Melissa Lucio for the 27th of April. On 15th April Ms. Lucio’s attorney filed a habeas petition appealing for her client to seek a stay of her execution and argued that she deserves a new trial because she is innocent and is falsely taken or misunderstood.

Death Sentence

Earlier, Lucio was sentenced to death back in 2008 and at the time when she was imprisoned, she was pregnant with twins, whom she had to give up for adoption as she could not have the nourishment of the babies in jail. Later, after having lots of letters, penalties, executions, and statements of defense from the side of Lucio’s attorney, Lucio was still put in the questioning for the murder of her youngest child at that time out of a total of 12 children born to her due to two marriages.

On 25th April 2022, the Texas Court issued a stay of execution and ordered the 138th Judicial District Court of Cameron County to consider new evidence in the case of Lucio for her innocence regarding the death of her daughter Mariah. Even after none of her children of Lucio accepted the physical abuse by their mother, the police and the pathologists continued to claim that Mariah’s death was not because of the fall from stairs.
