Jake Gelof is an American collegiate baseball third baseman for the Virginia Cavaliers. He has set the single-season and career records for home runs, RBI, and total bases at the University of Virginia.
He was named to the Second Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings and Perfect Game, and the Third Team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/Baseball America/D1Baseball.com.
Early Life
Jake Gelof was born on February 25, 2002. Gelof grew up in the coastal town of Rehoboth, Delaware. Adam and Kelly Gelof, both lawyers, raised their Jewish son. Zack Gelof, a member of the University of Virginia baseball team from 2019 to 21, was a second-round choice of the Oakland Athletics in 2021, is currently in the Athletics organization, and played for Team Israel in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Gelof went to Cape Henlopen High School in Delaware for his freshman through senior years. He was on the baseball team for two years. He was an All-Conference goalie for the school’s soccer team his sophomore year after recording eight shutouts.
In both baseball and soccer, he was named to the Freshman and Sophomore Academic All-Conference teams. When it came to baseball, he was Perfect Game’s number-one prospect in Delaware for the 2020 class and their top shortstop.
Jake Gelof Career
Following his sophomore year, he made the decision to finish his high school career at IMG Academy (’20) in Bradenton, Florida. Gelof threw a 91 mph fastball (and threw 92 mph from the infield and 94 mph from the outfield) and ran the 60-yard sprint in 6.95 seconds in the first few months of 2019.
After finishing high school, he played summer collegiate baseball for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, where he posted a.281/.372/.422 batting line with eight doubles (tied for seventh in the league), two triples (tied for fourth), two home runs, and 19 RBIs in 128 at-bats, while predominantly occupying the position of shortstop.
The University of Virginia is where Gelof pursues his interest in Media Studies. During his freshman season, he batted.252/.336/.468 with 23 runs, 8 doubles, 4 home runs, and 15 RBIs in 111 at-bats. Four of his home runs came in the playoffs alone. He and his older brother Zack Gelof both had action in the infield as the 2021 squad reached the College World Series.
Gelof went on to play for the Kalamazoo Growlers of the wooden bat Northwoods League, where he batted.370 (third in the league)/.445/.597 (third) with 10 doubles, 5 home runs, and 21 RBIs in 119 at-bats. Gelof made the switch to third base in 2022, just before his sophomore season. On February 27, 2022, he hit for the cycle, the first time a Virginia player had done it in 21 years.
Virginia Cavaliers
He was selected Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week the next day after going 9-10 with four home runs and 15 RBIs during the series. As the season progressed, Gelof was nominated as a potential winner of the NCBWA’s Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy. Gelof was selected as a 2022 First Team All-ACC selection and a 2022 First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Gelof started the following summer with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he appeared in seven games, before being called up to play for the United States collegiate national team. To kick off his junior year in 2023, Gelof was named to the Preseason All-America First Team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the NCBWA, and Perfect Game, and to the Preseason All-America Second Team by D1Baseball.
He is the 35th player in the award’s history to be nominated for the Golden Spikes Award in more than one season. When it comes to home runs, RBI, and home runs in a single season, Gelof is unrivaled at UVA. Baseball writer Jim Callis believes Gelof is a potential first-round or supplementary first-round choice in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft, which will be held July 9-11, 2023, and that Gelof has the arm to stay at third base in the pros.
