Brown went to Marietta, Georgia’s Wheeler High School. He helped his team win the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class 6A State Championship as a senior. Brown sank two free throws with 0.6 seconds left to give Wheeler a 59–58 victory. Brown’s senior season included performances such as 28 points and 11 rebounds in a 76–70 win over Harry Giles and Wesleyan Christian Academy.

Brown was taken third overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics on June 23, 2016. After averaging 16.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 steals in six Summer League games; he signed his rookie scale contract with the Celtics on July 27. On October 26, he made his Celtics debut against the Brooklyn Nets, scoring nine points on 3-for-4 shooting and adding two blocked shots in 19 minutes. Brown scored 19 points in his first career start against the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 3, a 128–122 loss. Brown has always been quite discreet about his personal life. His relationship status, however, is the subject of some speculation. Jacqueline Hawileh is the one woman he has been linked to.
