Sergey Shoygu Biography

Sergey Shoygu is a Russian personality who is a politician and general of the army serving as the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation. Despite this, Shoigu has also been serving as the Council of Ministers of Defense of the CIS for almost 10 years. Previous to these positions, he has worked as the Minister of Emergency Situations from 1991 to 2012 and has briefly served as the governor of Moscow Oblast in 2012. Recently, Shoygu has been in the news because of his involvement in Russia-Ukraine (2022). He made a comment that Russia has not been involved in any invasion against Ukraine while having a meeting with the UK defense secretary named Ben Wallace.

Early Life

Shoigu was born on 21st May 1955 and as of 2022, he is 67 years old. Shoigu was brought up in Chadan, Tuvan Autonomous Oblast, from where he went to School No. 1 of Kyzyl city and received his primary education. His father’s name is Kuzhuget Shoygu (1921–2010) and his mother’s name is Alexandra Yakovlevna Shoygu (1924–2011), who was a Ukrainian-born Russian mother. Shoigu received his graduation degree from the Krasnoyarsk Polytechnic Institute in 1977 with the degree of Civil Engineering. Shoigu is a well-known speaker of at least nine languages including Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, English, and Russian.

Sergey Shoygu Career

Following his graduation in 1977,  Shoygu briefly worked on construction projects. In 1988, Shoygu was honored with the position of minor functionary in the Abakan branch, after which he was given another position for Komsomol, which he maintained for another few years. In 1990, Shoygu relocated to Moscow from Siberia and was given the position of Deputy Chief of State Architecture and Construction Committee of the Russian Federation. Shoigu was given the position of the head of Rescuer Corps in 1991, after which, he was given more responsibilities and was renamed as the first person to the State Committee on Emergencies and eventually became the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

For a brief period, he gained the limelight and became one of the most popular military men because of his hands-on management style during the emergencies like floods, earthquakes, and acts of terrorism. Later in 1999, Shoigu became one of the leading personalities in the Russian Pro-government party Unity as he was appointed as the leader of the party. Later, he was honored with the award of Russia’s most prestigious state award called Hero of the Russian Federation. In March 2012, Shoigu was given the honor of the most potential candidate for the Governor of Moscow Oblast.

Defence Ministry

Later on 5th April 2012, he was elected by the Moscow Oblast Duma, after which he became the 3rd Governor of Moscow Oblast and he took the position on 11th May 2012. In November 2012, Shoigu was given the position of Minister of Defence by Putin. In July 2014, he was charged with the criminal case as it was stated that he helped “illegal military groups” belonging to the Ukrainian Army in Eastern Ukraine.  Later, he was reappointed to the government position of Medvedev’s second government in 2018, and thereafter, he was appointed in the Mishustin government in 2020.

Personal Life

Sergey Shoygu is a happily married man, who has a wife (Irina Alexandrovna Shoygu) and two adult daughters (by now). Irina Alexandrovna Shoygu is also a working woman, who is serving as the president of a business tourism company called Expo-EM. In 1977, the pair gave birth to their first child (a daughter) who was named Yulia. Two years later in 1991, the couple gave birth to their second child (another daughter), who was given the name Ksenia.
