Early Life
Ubah Hassan was born in Somalia in 1983. Hassan’s mom and two sisters left war-torn Somalia for Ethiopia in 1991. Hassan, her father, and her younger brother remained in Somalia until 1994 when they emigrated to Kenya. Hassan moved to Canada when she was fifteen to join her mother and sisters, who had already made the journey there. Her family spent a year in a homeless shelter after they relate to Canada.
Ubah Hassan Career
Ubah began her modeling career in Vancouver and Toronto after a photographer discovered her skills while she was just seventeen years old. She was also the owner of a diner when she lived in Vancouver. She signed with Click Model Management in New York City in 2007. There, she started appearing in magazine spreads and on runway shows.
Hassan was named Model.com’s Model of the Week back in May of 2008. She appeared twice on Vogue Italia, first in the July 2008 Black issue, shot by Steven Meisel, and again in the January 2009 Soul Kitchen issue, photographed by Bruce Weber. She even appeared in the Spring/Summer 2009 advertising campaign for Ralph Lauren.
Ubah has collaborated with several other well-known names in the fashion industry, including Oscar de la Renta, Rachel Roy, Malan Breton, Betsey Johnson, Gucci, Lucky Brand Jeans, Polaroid, and Macy’s. Hassan is currently under contract with Richard’s International Model Management in Vancouver.
She played a main role in the documentary short film called Ubah! in March 2015. Hassan opens up about her childhood in Somalia, her modeling career, and charity work in Cambodia in this short documentary. Hassan is the founder and CEO of Ubah Hot, an African-inspired vegan hot sauce company. After being named one of Oprah’s Favourite Things in November 2021, the spicy sauce hit store shelves that June.
She participated in the seventh episode of the first season of the Netflix reality series My Unorthodox Life, where she discussed her spicy sauce brand with the show’s protagonist Julia Haart. Hassan’s casting on The Real Housewives of New York City was revealed in October 2022. The fourteenth season of the show, Hassan’s first, started on July 16, 2023.
