Ryan Folmar is a former catcher and current baseball coach in the United States. He currently serves as the head coach of the baseball team at Oral Roberts University. From 1994 to 1997, he played baseball for Oklahoma State under Gary Ward and Tom Holliday. From 1997 to 1998, he was a professional with the Colorado Rockies.
Early Life
Ryan was born on 8th November 1974 in Hillsdale, Michigan, and he graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. After finishing graduation he embarked on his professional journey as California Angels selected him in the 46th round of the 1993 Major League Baseball Draft. However, he opted to play college baseball for Oklahoma State instead.
He continued his baseball career after his senior year of college by joining the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 1995. He was a four-year starter for the Cowboys and was an integral part of their run to the 1996 College World Series. After finishing college, he spent two years in the Colorado Rockies’ minor league system.

Playing Career
Folmar played for Oklahoma State for four years (1994-1997), earning honorable mention All-Big 8 recognition as a sophomore in 1995 and contributing to the Cowboys’ run to the 1996 College World Series. After his time with the Cowboys, the Pennsylvania native moved on to play for the Colorado Rockies for two years. After working for Oklahoma State for five years (1999-2003) as the Director of Baseball Operations, Folmar decided to join the Golden Eagles. During his time at OSU, Folmar oversaw several administrative tasks, such as the Cowboy baseball camps, and provided color commentary for radio broadcasts.
Coaching
Trevino, a first-year third baseman, benefited greatly from Folmar’s coaching in 2012 when he was named Summit League Newcomer of the Year and was named to two freshman All-America teams. In 2006, the Golden Eagles were placed in the top 25 in every major collegiate baseball poll and made it to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Folmar’s offense carried the team, as he was in the top 20 in batting average, runs scored, and slugging percentage at the national level. Folmar spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach at ORU.
Rise to Fame
He is widely considered to be among the best hitting coaches in collegiate baseball. During Folmar’s nine years as coach, the Golden Eagles went to the NCAA Regionals and won the Summit League Championship every year. The Eagles went 30-26 under Folmar’s direction in 2014, including 15-15 in Southland Conference play. This included a win against then-No. 8 Oklahoma State at home and a season sweep of then-No. 28 Oklahoma.
In 2015, the team’s leaders were Anthony Sequeria and Matt Whatley. Sequeria was a finalist for the John Olerud Award, given to the best two-way player in the country, and Whatley was named a Freshman All-America by four different outlets.
In 2015, Folmar’s Golden Eagles finished with a 41-16 record overall and a 25-5 record in The Summit League, making it to the postseason for the first time in three years. The Golden Eagles were particularly successful against their Big 12 rivals, going 5-1 on the season. This included road wins over Oklahoma and No. 12 Texas Tech as well as No. 10 Oklahoma State.
Eagles dominated the Summit League once again in 2021, winning the regular season title. Folmar was named Coach of the Year once again by his colleagues in the Summit League after leading his team to a 31-23 overall record and a 19-7 record. The Golden Eagles started to heat up in March, winning two of three against No. 8 LSU and at Dallas Baptist. ORU clinched the regular season championship by winning eight of its final 10 games. With a 6-4 win over Western Illinois on April 15, 2022, Folmar became just the fourth head coach in program history to earn 300 career victories.
