Rick Barnes is a well-known America-based men’s college basketball head coach, committed to the Tennessee Volunteers of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In May of 2022, he was selected as chair of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee after serving on the committee for multiple years. Early Life
Rick Barnes was born on 17th July 1954 in Hickory, North Carolina, which makes him 68 years old as of 2023. Rick Barnes Career
Rick began his career while studying higher education. In 1985-86, he joined Wimp Sanderson’s staff at Alabama as an assistant coach. The following year, he served as an assistant at Ohio State under Coach Gary Williams. Talking about his coaching career, he began with a job at North State Academy during the 1977-78 season. The following year, he served as an assistant under Coach Eddie Biedenbach at Davidson College for two seasons. He then moved on to George Mason where he served as an assistant to Joe Harrington from 1980-85. On 23rd April 1987, he joined his first head coaching position at George Mason. After leading his team to the conference tournament championship game, he was acknowledged as the league’s Co-Coach of the Year.
1988–1994 At Providence
He served as the head coach at Providence College for six years. He led the Providence Friars men’s basketball team and was named District I Coach of the Year by the NABC.
1994–1998 At Clemson
From 1994-1998, he served for the Clemson Tigers men’s basketball team. Under his guidance, Clemson made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
1998–2015 At Texas
On 12th April 1998, he was hired as the 23rd men’s basketball coach in Texas. Under his guidance, the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team made 16 NCAA tournament appearances. He coached Chris Mihm in 2000, T.J. Ford (National players of the year in 2003), Kevin Durant (National players of the year in 2007), and D.J. Augustin in 2008. He earned Big 12 Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time (including years (1999, 2003, 2008, 2014). He was also named NABC District 9 Coach of the Year for the fifth time (including years 1999, 2001, 2003, 2008, and 2014). Furthermore, he received the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award (2009) and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s (USBWA) Award accolade that honors his coaching excellence.
2015–present At Tennessee
Rick Barnes was appointed as coach by the Tennessee Volunteers Men’s Basketball Team on 31st March 2015. Since 2015, he has earned many titles and honors including the 2018 SEC Coach of the Year for helping the volunteers share their first regular-season SEC title in a decade and appear for the conference championship game. Eventually, this made him earn the sixth-career conference coach of the year award.
