Major General William Cooley began his Air Force career in 1988 after receiving his education through the ROTC program after graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering. Later in 1990 he received his master’s and entered active duty while going through Doctor of Philosophy in engineering physics. Major General William Cooley went through a variety of technical management, staff, and leadership positions while being in the commanding group and wing level. He remained a staff officer at the Warrior Preparation Center, Einsiedlerhof Air Station, Germany.
He remained a commander and worked at Air Force Research Laboratory and was responsible for $2.5 billion-plus $2.3 billion for Air Force Science and Technology Program and Research and Development respectively. While being in the position at the research laboratory, he was responsible for managing the government workforce of around 6K people. He was awarded at least 4 different medals including Air Force Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Air Force Achievement medal. Despite this, he has been honored with three other rewards including the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Legion of Merit.
Controversy
General William Cooley, who is on the line of losing all of his benefits and stars, faced a court-martial in April 2022. He has been charged with three counts of allegations because of the sexual assault against his sister-in-law. Cooley accepted his assault for forcibly kissing his sister-in-law and asking for her for a trip after both of them attended a family barbecue. It is the first time in history that any general has been taken for court-martial. The victim, Cooley’s brother’s wife, revealed that she was asked about the ride after drinking at a barbecue in New Mexico in 2018.
During the ride, Cooley who was having aspirations of having sex with her allegedly pressed her, kissed her, and groped her through her clothes. The decision of the court is still pending and is expected to be revealed by 25th April, Monday. Cooley was fired from his research laboratory position in January 2020 after an investigation by the Air Force and since then he has been involved in administrative jobs.
