Emilio Delgado was a Mexican personality who was a consistent performer on the small screen, an actor who used to perform on stage, theaters and give voices to different characters, and the best singer known for his particular role as Luis. He has remained a long-time performer of the show Sesame Street. He became a cast member of the show in 1971 and remained there in the leading role acting on the television screen till 2016. Following the termination or departure of the show, Emilio continued to have representation at various public events. He was famously known for his role as Luis in the show Sesame Street. He was serving the board of directors at Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice and was living in New York City with his only wife Carole until his death.
Early Life
Emilio Delgado was born on 8th May 1940 in Calexico, California but raised by his grandparents in Mexicali, Mexico because of the poor extension of the family. Like other normal citizens of the United States, he would have to walk daily to attend his public school in Calexico, California. He started working odd jobs at the age of 10 and later became a regular contender and the shop caretaker of his uncle’s bicycle shot at the age of 12. Emilio’s family relocated to Glendale, California when he was just a teenager. He went to Glendale High School, where during the three years, he was nominated as the president of Thespian Club. he played trombone both in the orchestra and a jazz band and majored in the subject of a marching band.
Emilio Delgado Career
Emilio began his professional career in acting in 1968 when he received his first equity job in a summer stock play. Later, he became the leading cast member of the first Mexican-American soap opera called Cancion de la Raza. While being at Los Angeles theater company Inner City Repertory, Delgado became friendly with Sergei Tschernisch, who helped him learn the new theater program. In October 1970 Delgado started having guest roles in the episodes of Storefront Lawyers before landing on the regular series of Angie’s Garage in November 1970. Angie’s Garage was one of the new series which focused on serving Mexican-American children. With the help of the series, he was discovered and spotted by the Sesame Street producers.
Delgado gave many voiceovers both with or without an accent and worked for many theaters. He performed in the series Sesame Street from 1971–1988 for the first time and later from 1988 to 2016. The efforts were made to lead the updates of the content till season 4. For a very long time, Delgado played the same role in the series and appeared continuously on US television for a longer time. During Sesame Street’s 19th season that was aired in 1988, Delgado’s character Luis was married to Maria (played by Sonia Manzano). According to one of Delgado’s interviews, he said that many fans think that the marriage was real, but, the fact of the matter is, it was part of terrific acting.
Rise to Fame
Emilio appeared at various pop culture conventions and became one of the leading personalities of the show “Sesame Street”. Delgado would take guest roles on other series while he was not working with Sesame Street. He had various recurring roles as a national news editor on the television series called Lou Grant. Later, in Los Angeles, he became a company member of Inner City Rep, The Group Repertory, and LA Repertory. He also gave a few of his desperation and fascinating roles for a few of the theater work called Floating Home (HExTC), Boxing 2000 (Richard Maxwell NYC Players), Dinosaurios (IATI), and most importantly, he appeared in the role of King Claudius in Asolo Repertory Theatre production of Hamlet while alternating in both English and Spanish.

Personal Life
Emilio Delgado married thrice in his whole life. First, he was married to Barbara Snavely (1963 to 1975), then to Linda Lee Moon (1977 to 1983), and lastly to Carole Delgado (1990 till demise). He was having a son from one of his previous marriages. He was committed to his third wife, with whom he shared a relationship of 32 years, at the time of his demise. Delgado often used to say that many of his fans used to think that he was, in reality, married to his co-star Maria, as being presumed in the series Sesame Street. But, it was the acting part and nothing more. The couple is known to have two children, one is a son (Aram Delgado) and another one is a daughter (Lauren Delgado).
