Laurie Stephens is an American alpine monoskier with spina bifida known for representing her country at various international events including the world-renowned, Paralympics. She won several medals at the Paralympics as well as in other championships. She is going to represent her nation yet again at the Beijing Paralympics 2022 and she is among those players who can bag a medal for their side.
Early Life
Laurie Stephens was born on 5th March 1984 in Wenham, Massachusetts, USA to her parents John and Donna Stephens. She was born with Spina bifida disability and chose to fight it early on in life when she started taking an active part in sports. She grew up with her brother Scott in her hometown. Laurie attended Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and is known to have completed her college education from the University of New Hampshire where she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. Laurie Stephens Career
Laurie had always been active in skiing and loved the sport since she was 12 and by the age of 15, she became a member of Christ Devlin young’s New England disabled ski team. She started participating in local and national competitions in events of five categories Downhill sitting, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and Super combined. She later competed in Paralympic games in 2006 marking her debut. Laurie also competed in 2010, 2014, and 2018 Paralympic games and collected a total of 7 medals including 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3bronze. Meanwhile, she also competed at IPC Alpine Skiing world championships since 2011 Sestriere where she won a silver and bronze medal.
By 2013, she competed at La Molina and recorded a bronze and gold medal in Downhill and Sitting events, and later in 2015 Panorama, she again recorded a bronze medal. Recently in 2021 World Para Snow Sports, Norway, she won a gold medal in women’s giant slalom sitting para-alpine skiing event. Currently, she is representing the USA at the 2022 Beijing Paralympic games and is set to have her first event for downhill sitting on day 7-5th March 2022. She will face a tight race against world-reputed athletes like Anna Lena Foster and Kranjska Gora.
